Only New York City has more artists per capita, and the Somerville Arts Council and Somerville Open Studios hold events year-round to showcase local talent and bring together like-minded creative types. Joining the artists is a mix of young professionals, college kids, new immigrants and working class families.
Once nicknamed "Slummerville" for its high crime-rate and blue-collar reputation, the town has turned around in the past 20 years with the extension of the Boston subway's Red Line.
