Auto sales: What's moving, what's not

Smaller vehicles are still selling relatively well, but sales of big trucks and SUVs continue to crater.

Upside: Compact cars
If you want to see a real fight, look at compact car sales. With gas prices up, the segment is a bright spot for the auto industry. When sales are down, declines are usually slight and often tied to a lack of supply.

Even with dismal sales figures all around, Ford is still gaining ground with its Focus. At 165,000 so far this year, sales are up more than 24% compare to the same time frame last year.

The Focus is still no match for the stalwart Toyota Corolla which sold about 280,000 by the end of September. But Corolla sales are actually down a bit from last year.

That puts the Corolla behind the Honda Civic, which has sold 285,000 so far this year, an increase of 12%.

GM's compact offerings, the Pontiac G5 and virtually identical Chevrolet Cobalt are up just slightly from last year.
