Cockpit flies back to the '60s
GM's design chief Ed Welburn brought his own 1969 Camaro into the studio as inspiration for designers working on the new version. But GM designers deliberately avoided aping the old car when creating the new one.

"You could have taken a car and duplicated the first generation Camaro, but it has to be more than that," said Camaro marketing manager John Fitzpatrick.

The new model's interior actually has more retro design cues than the outside does.

The speedometer and tachometer have a deep concave design surrounded by squared-off housing, a look that also borrows from classic Camaros.

Small rectangular gauges in front of the gear shifter show oil pressure, transmission fluid temperature, torque output and battery voltage.

Gentle interior "mood lighting" comes from LED "light pipes" though-out the interior.
